Unlocking the potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuels
EQUILIBRION: EQ.FLIGHT
Producing the vast volumes of low-carbon fuel needed to decarbonise the aviation industry, reliably and at scale, is at the heart of eq.flight, a Department for Transport part-funded programme which uses the by-product of nuclear energy generation to create Sustainable Aviation Fuels.
The challenge? Turning this innovation from equilibrion into real-life delivery.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) development and delivery market is nascent, with limited cross-sector expertise in chemical processing and nuclear engineering. Working in partnership with equilibrion, Built Confidence devised and developed a winning procurement process for their cutting-edge technology – moving from the programme from innovation to delivery.
Learning the lessons from recent major projects in the UK – misjudging market capacity (HS2) and operational teams struggling owing to a lack of integration (Crossrail) – Built Confidence developed a maturing model which supports the scaling of programme delivery around the world.
The final process developed ensures the market has capacity and is clear on the capabilities required, incentivises the required investments in skills and technology, unlocks performance based behaviours, and cuts across siloes within the supply chain.
Success starts here
Working in close partnership with equilibrion, we supported them to define overall outcomes and success criteria, researched risks and opportunities, and explored which capabilities would be core to delivery.
Thanks to a process of collaborative market engagement, we identified which capabilities should sit with the client and which should come from future supply chain partners (driven by market appetite and regulatory requirements).
The end result is an incentivised procurement model based on deep collaboration that we are confident will attract huge engagement from future partners. It is a replicable blueprint for markets across the globe, and built to meet the world's growing demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuels.
